Qatar/ Doha – The arabic pearl in the desert

Ende Januar 2020 haben Arzu und ich uns auf den Weg nach Doha, der Hauptstadt Qatars gemacht. Die meisten unter euch assoziieren mit Qatar sofort die Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft, die 2022 in Qatar stattfinden wird. Natürlich ist mir das auch sofort in den Sinn gekommen und so haben wir uns als Team Mr. Gentleguy auf den Weg nach Doha gemacht, um das Land über den Austragungsort der Fußballweltmeisterschaft hinaus näher kennenzulernen. All unsere Eindrücke und Tipps möchten wir natürlich auch gleich mit euch teilen, daher lasst uns an dieser Stelle auf eine kleine gemeinsame Reise in die arabische Wüste, nach Qatar machen.

Diese Reise begann am Münchner Flughafen mit Qatar Airways. Die Fluggesellschaft ist sehr beeindruckend. Obwohl wir nur Economy geflogen sind, fühlt man sich an Board wie ein Ehrengast und merkt das hohe Servicebewusstsein der Qatar Airways Mitarbeiter. Kein Wunder, dass die Airline von den Passagieren bereits zum fünften Mal zur Besten Airline des Jahres gekürt wurde. Der großartige Service an Board ging bei Ankunft am Hamad International Airport auch fließend weiter. Es gibt nämlich einen speziellen Arrival Service, der ist wirklich schwer zu toppen. Wenn man den Al Maha Arrival Service gebucht hat, begibt man sich in die spezielle Lounge und wird persönlich empfangen. Hier muss man sich nicht wie sonst üblich für die Immigration anstellen, sondern die ganze Bürokratie wird erledigt, während man sich mit Getränken und Leckereien verwöhnt. Selbst unsere Koffer wurden für uns vom Gepäckband geholt und uns übergeben. Wir waren nun mehr als bereit und super neugierig, um mit unserer Qatar Reise loszulegen.

Das Emirat Qatar mit seiner schönen und authentischen Hauptstadt Doha befindet sich an der Ostküste der arabischen Halbinsel am Persischen Golf und ist selbst eine Halbinsel. Das Land bietet durch seine Geografie vielseitige Angebote und hat eine sehr interessante Geschichte. Ehemals als ein Ort für Beduinen und Perlentaucher – heute eine Metropole zwischen Moderne und Tradition. Arzu und ich lieben Länder und Städte, die ihre eigene Tradition leben und erhalten haben, daher hat uns Qatar besonders beeindruckt. Die Qataris haben die perfekte Mischung gefunden. Daher werdet ihr euch während eurem Aufenthalt in Qatar sehr willkommen fühlen, denn die Gastfreundlichkeit, die der Kultur zu verdanken ist, wird hier ausgiebig gelebt. Wir sind sehr oft ins Gespräch mit Einheimischen gekommen und hatten wirklich sehr nette Konversationen, insbesondere die jungen Qataris haben selbst das Gespräch mit uns gesucht. Somit hatten wir die Gelegenheit persönliche und echte Einblicke zu gewinnen und haben gesehen, wie weltoffen, westlich und modern das Leben der Menschen in Doha ist.

Must-Sees in Doha

Doha bietet sehr viele verschiedene Sehenswürdigkeiten, daher ist für jeden Reisenden etwas dabei. Von Kultur, Natur bis hin zu Architektur – man findet einfach alles was das Herz begehrt. Der fortschrittliche Gedanke und die prägende und lehrreiche Vergangenheit sind überall wiederzufinden. Die Qataris legen viel Wert darauf, in allem was sie neu bauen oder gestalten, ihre eigene Geschichte einzubinden. Man sieht hier viele moderne Gebäude, aber dennoch mit Bezug zur eigenen Kultur und Geschichte. Nun zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten:

• Al Hazm Mall

Die Al Hazm Mall in Doha gleicht einem Palast aus der Renaissance. Man muss beim Betreten des Open-Air Areals gleich zwei Mal hinschauen, denn man fühlt sich hier definitiv wie in einem Schloss. Die Mall beinhaltet viele Restaurants und Cafes, sowie zahlreiche Designer Boutiquen. Hier waren auch die Fashionshows, die Arzu und ich im Rahmen des Shop Qatar Festivals besucht haben.

• Mall of Qatar & Villagio

Auf Grund des sehr heißen Wetters in Qatar, gibt es viele geschlossene Malls die nicht nur zum Shoppen, sondern auch zum Verweilen einladen. Hier gibt es vom Kino, Theater bis hin zu einem Freizeitpark alles im Gesamtangebot der Malls. Die Mall of Qatar und das an Italien angelehnte Villagio sind unsere persönlichen Favoriten. Es gibt viele tolle Boutiquen, aber auch die herkömmlichen Brands und Shops, die wir kennen, sind dort überall vertreten. Es ist also für jeden Shoppingtypen etwas dabei. Plant hier definitiv reichlich Zeit ein, denn die Malls sind allgemein sehr groß ausgelegt und bieten wirklich viele Aktivitäten.

• Al Shaqab Horse Training & Breeding Center

Nicht nur für Pferdeliebhaber ist das Gestüt Al Shaqab ein Must-See. Diese riesige Farm ist ein Ort, an dem man reinrassige Arabische Pferde bewundern kann. Natürlich besteht auch die Möglichkeit eine Kuschelrunde mit den Pferden und Fohlen einzulegen. Durch dieses Gestüt wird der Erhalt der sehr angesehenen Araber-Rasse unterstützt. Es ist sehr interessant, was für eine Wellness-Oase für die Pferde extra geschaffen wurde. Vom Laufband, Swimmingpool bis hin zum Jacuzzi – es gibt einfach alles was das Pferdeherz begehrt. Selbst das Futter ist höchster Qualität und wird speziell ausgesucht. Hier merkt man, wie sehr die Qataris ihre Tradition ehren und für den Erhalt dieser Rasse und des Reitsports Einsatz zeigen.

• Museum of Islamic Art

Islamische Kunst aus 14 Jahrhunderten in einer unfassbar schönen Architektur erwartet den Besucher im Museum für islamische Kunst. Das sogenannte MIA ist auch ein Ort für tolle kulturelle Veranstaltungen. Das Gebäude ist eine moderne, aber an der islamischen Kultur orientierte Architektur. Designed wurde das MIA von dem berühmten I.M. Pei, dem Architekten, der auch das berühmte Louvre in Paris entworfen hat. Ein wirklich sehr atemberaubender Ort, an dem man am liebsten alles fotografieren möchte.

• Football Stadium

Qatar heißt die Welt des Fußballs in 2022 willkommen. Die Weltmeisterschaft wird an diesem schönen Ort stattfinden. Auf Grund der großen Hitze während der Sommer wird die WM zum ersten Mal im Winter stattfinden – ist das nicht spannend? Im Zuge dessen, konnte ich bereits jetzt zwei der acht WM-Stadien sehen. Es ist so interessant, wie jedes Stadium einen Bezug zu der eigenen Geschichte Qatars haben wird, insbesondere durch die Form und Architektur. Auch wurden die Stadien bereits so konzipiert, dass sie nach dem großen Fußball-Event, zurückgebaut werden können und als Mehrzweck-Flächen zum Beispiel Konzerte, Messen und diverse Veranstaltungen beherbergen werden können. Ich bin schon sehr auf 2022 gespannt!

• Katara

Katara ist ein Ort für Kultur, Sport und Kunst. In Katara gibt es Theater, Galerien, Bühnen und Restaurants – ein Treffpunkt für viele. Es ist auch ein öffentlicher Strand zu finden und eine Uferpromenade für romantische Spaziergänge. Das imposante Amphitheater ist auch hier zu finden. Darüber hinaus gibt es in Katara auch die Goldene Moschee und die Katara Moschee – auch eine sehr schöne und bunte Moschee. Diese Moschee wurde von einer türkischen Architektin namens Zeynep Fadillioglu entworfen und ist somit die einzige Moschee, die von einer Frau konzipiert wurde.

• The Pearl

The Pearl ist eine künstliche Insel vor der West Bay mit einem beeindruckenden Jachthafen und vielen Villen. Auf dieser künstlichen Insel sind hauptsächlich Wohngebäude entstanden. Hier hat man einen tollen Ausblick auf den Rest von Qatar und die Corniche.

• National Library & Education City Mosque

Zwei sehr beeindruckende Orte in Qatar. Architektur spielt hier wieder eine sehr wichtige und zentrale Rolle. Insbesondere die Education City Moschee ist eine eher untypische Gebetsstätte, die mit ihrer modernen Architektur definitiv aus der Reihe tanzt. Hier erkennt man wie weltoffen der Glaube ist. Eine sehr modern interpretierte Moschee verbindet die Säulen des Islam mit der heutigen Zeit. Definitiv sehenswert!

• Souq Waqif

Der Souq Waqif ist das älteste Stadtzentrum und ermöglicht einen Einblick in einen traditionellen arabischen Bazaar wie aus 1001 Nacht. Hier findet man orientalische Waren, Gewürze, Souvenirs, Restaurants, Shisha Cafes und vieles mehr. Die kleinen Gassen sind sehr authentisch und lassen einen in die Geschichte versinken. Früher war dieser Ort, der Hauptknotenpunkt für den Handel, wenn die Beduinen aus der Wüste ankamen.

• Museum of National History

Die Geschichte Qatars kann man in der wunderschönen „Wüstenrose“ entdecken. Das Museum wurde von dem Stararchitekten Jean Novel entworfen und gleicht den Blättern einer Wüstenrose. Also wieder ein Gebäude mit Bezug zur Natur des eigenen Landes. In diesem Museum kann man sehen, wie die Vorfahren in Zelten gelebt haben und als Perlentaucher ihr Leben finanziert haben. Also passend zu Wüstenrose, die auch eine Verbindung zwischen Meer und der Wüste ist. Insgesamt erstreckt sich die Museumsstrecke in der Wüstenrose über eineinhalb Kilometer. Qatar ist eine sehr junge Nation, hat aber bereits viel Tradition und Geschichte, die an diesem Ort sehr schön und in anschaulicher Weise dargestellt wird. Aber nicht nur die Historie des Landes wird hier aufgearbeitet, sondern man lernt auch viel über die Gegenwart und die Zukunft des Landes. Eines meiner persönlichen Highlights der Reise ist dieses Museum.

• Al Wakrah Desert & Camp

Bisher war ich noch nie in der Wüste – der Besuch der Al Wakrah Wüste war somit für Arzu und mich ein erstes Mal. Es ist ein sehr prägendes und überragendes Gefühl, in Mitten der Wüste zu stehen und sich wie im nirgendwo zu fühlen. Überall um einen ist lediglich Sand und nochmals Sand. Winzig und verloren fühlt man sich im ersten Moment – ein wirklich besonderes Erlebnis. Ich empfehle es jedem! Die Wüste Al Wakrah hat aber noch etwas besonderes an sich, sie ist eine von zwei Wüsten, die ans Meer anschließen. Ein wirkliches Naturwunder! Im Anschluss habt ihr die Möglichkeit eine Lunch-Pause im Camp einzulegen. Hier gibt es leckeres Mittagsessen und auch die Option im Meer zu baden und sich zu sonnen. Nehmt euch daher eure Schwimmsachen mit.

Ihr seht, Qatar hat viele tolle Sightseeing-Spots und ist ein Ort für Kultur, Kunst und Geschichte. Tradition und Authentizität wird hier sehr großgeschrieben!

Hotspots für Food und Drinks

Was wäre nur eine Reise ohne tolle Locations für Food und Drinks. Wir ihr wisst, lieben es Arzu und ich neue Restaurants und Cafés zu entdecken. Doha bietet diesbezüglich sehr viele Optionen, sodass man die Qual der Wahl hat. Unsere persönlichen Highlights sind diese Locations:

• Rosemary Café

Das edle und stylishe Cafe befindet sich in der Al Hazm Mall und ist ein echter Hingucker. Das Interior aber auch die Terrasse sind voll mit Rosen und bis ins kleinste Detail abgestimmt. Hier sieht aber alles nicht nur gut aus, sondern der Kaffee schmeckt auch sehr gut. Wir lieben Kaffee und dieser hier gehört wirklich in die höhere Liga – ein absolut toller Kaffeegenuss in einer instagramable Location.

• STK Steak House

Wirklich sehr gutes und qualitatives Steak gibt es im edlen STK Steak Restaurant im Ritz Carlton Hotel. Dieses Restaurant bietet viele verschiedene Fleischsorten und eine vielfältige Karte. Die Beratung ist auch top, sodass man in kürzester Zeit das perfekte Steak nach seinem Geschmack findet. Das Steak war sehr zart und genau auf den Punkt gegrillt – auch die Vorspeise, eine Kartoffel-Trüffel-Suppe und das Dessert waren ein Gaumen Genuss. Von hier aus hat man auch einen großartigen Ausblick über Doha.

• Parisa

Kommen wir zu einem sehr atemberaubenden Restaurant, dem Parisa – ein persisches Restaurant mitten im Souq Waqif. Bereits mit dem ersten Schritt in die Räumlichkeiten zückt man seine Kamera und weiß nicht wohin man als erstes schauen soll. Das gesamte Restaurant ist mit Spiegeln und bunten Steinen dekoriert – die Wände, Decken, ach einfach alles ist ein funkelnder Palast. Es wartet zudem ein tolles Geschmackserlebnis auf den Gast. Aber nicht nur das Interior ist glänzend, sondern auch die persischen Gerichte. Traditionelle kalte und warme Vorspeisen und vielfältige Hauptgerichte machen einem die Wahl schwer. Man will am liebsten gleich alles probieren.

• SMAT Restaurant

Das SMAT ist der Inbegriff für traditionelle arabische Fusions-Küche. Die authentische und reichhaltigen Gerichte Qatars kann man kaum besser entdecken als an diesem Ort. Der obere Bereich des Restaurants ist sehr prunkvoll eingerichtet und lädt zum Staunen ein. Am liebsten hätten wir jeden Tag hier gegessen. Daher müsst ihr einen Besuch im SMAT unbedingt in euren Doha Urlaub integrieren. Unsere persönlichen Highlight-Gerichte sind die Weinblätter Sushirollen, die Käsetaschen und das geschmorte Rind auf leckerem Safran-Reis. Dieses Restaurant rundet die kulinarische Reise perfekt ab.

• Yasmine Palace

Yasmine Palace liegt im Bereich der Pearl, also der künstlichen Insel in Doha. Diese Location ist ein IT-Place Dohas und man kann auf viele Einheimische und bekannte Persönlichkeiten treffen. Das Restaurant ist sehr traditionell und ähnelt einem typischen arabischen Palast – es befindet sich sogar ein Brunnen mitten im Restaurant. Die Karte ist regelrecht ein Buch. Wir haben uns dazu entschieden, viele kleine Gerichte in die Mitte zu bestellen. So hat man die Möglichkeit einen umfangreichen Einblick in die qatarische Küche zu bekommen. Der Humus und der Falafel sind allerdings ein Must-Have, ihr werdet es mir danken! Ich würde fast behaupten, hier den besten Humus und die besten Falafel gegessen zu haben.

• Katara Marine Restaurant

Das Katara Marine liegt am Ende eines langen Stegs und ebenfalls auf der künstlichen Insel Qatars. Hier ist es perfekt, wenn man einen romantischen Abend auf der Außen-Terrasse mit Blick auf das Meer genießen will. Die Karte ist ein Mix aus europäischen und arabischen Gerichten.

Good to know

Es gibt in Doha regelmäßig besondere Festivals zu unterschiedlichen Themenbereichen. Unser Reisetermin hätte kaum passender sein können, denn es fand gerade das Shop Qatar Festival statt. Perfekt also, um die tollen und großen Shopping Malls zu erkunden und super Schnäppchen zu machen. Im Rahmen von Shop Qatar haben wir auch die Möglichkeit ergriffen, um unserer Passion, der Mode, nachzugehen. Es gab nämlich großartige Fashionshows, die natürlich in beeindruckenden Locations stattgefunden haben. Da hat man sich wie im Palast gefühlt, während man die neuen Trends begutachten konnte. Besser hätte es nicht passen können. So konnten wir Fashion und Travel perfekt miteinander kombinieren.

Wenn wir schon über Mode reden, in Qatar herrscht eine lockere Bekleidungsregelung und daher muss man sich weder verhüllen noch irgendwelche Bedenken haben. Dennoch empfiehlt es sich aus Respekt gegenüber der Kultur, sich nicht allzu freizügig anzuziehen. Bezüglich der Strandkleidung solltet ihr darauf achten an öffentlichen Stränden und Plätzen keine Bikinis anzuziehen.

In Qatar sind die Arbeitstage von Sonntag bis Donnerstag, sprich der Freitag entspricht unserem Sonntag und der Samstag ist auch vergleichbar mit unserem Samstag. Die Malls haben aber immer geöffnet und daher hat man eigentlich immer eine Option, shoppen zu gehen. Ihr könnt auch überall bequem Geld wechseln oder easy mit euerer Kreditkarte bezahlen.

In Bezug auf das Klima sollte man bei seiner Reise nach Qatar im Hinterkopf behalten, dass ganzjährig Wüstenklima herrscht. Also perfekt, um einen kurzen Trip in die Sonne zu machen. Die durchschnittliche Temperatur liegt im Winter bei 17 Grad und im Sommer bei 40 Grad. Arzu und ich haben das Wetter im Januar als sehr angenehm empfunden, man konnte die Entdeckungstour und die Aktivitäten bei angenehmen Temperaturen um 19-20 Grad tagsüber durchführen. Lediglich etwas windig war es – hat aber keinesfalls gestört. Perfekt, um im Winter etwas Sonne zu tanken.

Wir sind am Ende unserer gemeinsamen Reise nach Doha und Qatar angekommen. Viele Eindrücke und Infos haben wir auf diesem Weg mit euch geteilt und uns liegt es wirklich sehr am Herzen, alles so real und authentisch wie möglich mit euch, unseren wertvollen Lesern, zu teilen. Manchmal hat man ein gewisses Bild vor Augen oder zu wenig Infos über ein Land – und verpasst daher eine Perle auf der Welt. Daher ist es wichtig Eindrücke zu teilen und zu reisen, um so den Horizont zu erweitern.

Qatar hat uns nicht als Fremde, sondern durch die Gastfreundlichkeit als Freunde empfangen. Wir haben uns stets willkommen und wohl gefühlt – daher ist eines klar, wir werden uns wiedersehen Qatar!

At the end of January 2020, Arzu and me, we went to Doha, the capital of Qatar. Most of you will immediately associate Qatar with the Football World Cup, which will take place in Qatar in 2022. I admit this was also the first thought that came to my mind. But we as team Mr. Gentleguy dedided to go for Doha to get to know the country better beyond being the venue of the World Cup. Of course we would like to share all our impressions and tips with you, so let’s go on a little trip to Qatar – the Arabian desert.

Our trip started at Munich Airport with Qatar Airways. The airline is very impressive. Although we only flew economy class, you feel like a guest of honour on board and notice the high service awareness of the Qatar Airways staff. There’s no wonder that the airline was voted Best Airline of the Year by passengers for the fifth time. The great service on board also continued smoothly upon arrival at Hamad International Airport. There is a special arrival service that is really hard to beat. Once you have booked the Al Maha Arrival Service, you go to the special lounge and are personally welcomed. You don’t have to queue for the immigration as it is usually the case, but the whole bureaucracy is done while you can help yourself with drinks and delicacies. Even our suitcases were picked up from the luggage conveyor belt and handed over to us. We were now more than ready and super curious to start our Qatar adventure.

The Emirate of Qatar with its beautiful and authentic capital Doha is located on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf and is a peninsula itself. Due to its geography, the country offers a wide range of activities and has a very interesting history. Once a place for Bedouins and pearl divers – today a metropolis between modernity and tradition. Arzu and I love countries and cities that live and have preserved their own traditions, which is why Qatar particularly impressed us. The Qataris have found the perfect mixture. Therefore, you will feel very welcome during your stay in Qatar, because weel feel the hospitality everywhere. We have often met locals and had really nice conversations, especially the young Qataris themselves approached us to have a talk. So we had the opportunity to gain personal insights and saw how cosmopolitan, western and modern the life of the people in Doha is.

Must-Sees in Doha

Doha offers many different sights. From culture, nature to architecture – you can find everything your traveller’s heart desires. The progressive thought and the formative and instructive past can be found everywhere. The Qataris attach great importance to incorporating their own history in everything they build or design. You can see many modern buildings, but still with reference to their own culture and history. Now to the sights:

– Al Hazm Mall

The Al Hazm Mall in Doha resembles a Renaissance palace. You have to look twice when entering the open-air area, because you definitely feel like in a castle. The mall contains many restaurants and cafes, also numerous designer boutiques. Moreover the fashion shows that Arzu and I visited during the Shop Qatar Festival took place here.

– Mall of Qatar & Villagio

Due to the very hot weather in Qatar, there are many in-door malls that invite you to shop and to spend some time. Here you can find diverse facilities like cinema, theatre, a leisure park and a ice skating arena. The Mall of Qatar and the Italian-style Villagio are our personal favorites. There are many great boutiques, but also the traditional brands and shops are represented. So there is no excuse for not going shopping. Definitely schedule plenty of time as the malls are generally very huge and really offer a lot of different activities and great food courts.

– Al Shaqab Horse Training & Breeding Center

The Al Shaqab Horse Training Center is a must see not only for horse lovers but for everyone. This huge farm is a place where you can admire purebred Arabian horses. Of course there is also the possibility to have a cuddle with the horses and foals. Through this stud farm the preservation of the very respected Arab breed is supported. It is very interesting to see what kind of spectacular wellness oasis has been created for the horses. From treadmill, swimming pool to Jacuzzi – there is simply everything a horse’s heart desires. Even the food is of the highest quality and is specially selected. Here you can see how much the Qataris honour their tradition and are committed to the preservation of this breed and equestrian sport.

– Museum of Islamic Art

Islamic art from 14 centuries in an incredibly beautiful architecture awaits the visitor in the Museum of Islamic Art. The so-called MIA is also a place for great cultural events. The building has a modern architecture, but is oriented towards the Islamic culture. The MIA was designed by the famous I.M. Pei, the architect who also designed the famous Louvre in Paris. A really breathtaking place, where you would like to photograph everything.

– Football Stadium

Qatar welcomes the world of football in 2022. The FIFA World Cup will be held in this beautiful place. Due to the great heat during the summer, the World Cup will take place in winter for the first time – isn’t that exciting? As a result, I could already see two of the eight World Cup stadiums. It’s so interesting how each stadium will have a connection to Qatar’s own history, especially through the design and the architecture. The stadiums have also already been designed in such a way that they can be dismantled after the big football event and used as multi-purpose areas to host concerts, trade fairs and various events, for example. I am already very excited about 2022!

– Katara

Katara is a place for culture, sports and art. In Katara there are theatres, galleries, stages and restaurants – a meeting place for many people. There is also a public beach and a promenade for romantic walks. The impressive amphitheatre can also be found here. In addition, in Katara there is the Golden Mosque and the Katara Mosque – another very beautiful and colourful mosque. This mosque was designed by a Turkish architect named Zeynep Fadillioglu and thus is the only mosque designed by a woman.

– The Pearl

The Pearl is an artificial island off the West Bay with an impressive marina and many villas. On this artificial island mainly residential buildings have been built. Here you have a great view of the rest of Qatar and the Corniche.

– National Library & Education City Mosque

Two very impressive places in Qatar. Architecture again plays a very important and central role here. Especially the Education City Mosque is a rather untypical place of prayer, which definitely steps out of line with its modern architecture. Here you can see how cosmopolitan the faith is. A very modern interpreted mosque connects the pillars of Islam with the present time. Definitely worth seeing!

– Souq Waqif

The Souq Waqif is the oldest city centre and offers a glimpse of a traditional Arabic bazaar like from 1001 nights. Here you can find oriental goods, spices, souvenirs, restaurants, shisha cafes and much more. The small alleys are very authentic and let you dive into history. In former times this place was the main hub for trade when the Bedouins arrived from the desert.

– Museum of National History

The history of Qatar can be discovered in the beautiful “Desert Rose”. The museum was designed by the star architect Jean Novel and resembles the leaves of a desert rose. So again a building with reference to the nature of its own country. In this museum one can see how the ancestors lived in tents and financed their lives as pearl divers. So it fits to the desert rose, which is also a connection between sea and desert. In total, the museum route in the Desert Rose extends over one and a half kilometres. Qatar is a very young nation, but it already has a lot of tradition and history that is beautifully and appealingly presented at this place. But not only the history of the country is being presented here, but the visitors also learn a lot about the present and the future of the country. This museum is one of my personal highlights of the trip.

– Al Wakrah Desert & Camp

I have never been to the desert before – so the visit to the Al Wakrah desert was a first time for Arzu and me. It is a very formative and outstanding feeling to stand in the middle of the desert and feel like nowhere. All around you is nothing but just sand. You feel tiny and lost in the first moment – a really special experience. I recommend it to everyone! But the Al Wakrah desert still has something special about it, it is one of two deserts that connects with the sea. A real wonder of nature! Afterwards you have the possibility to have a lunch break in the camp. Here you will have a delicious lunch and also the option to go for swimming in the sea. So take your swimming gear with you.

As you can see, Qatar has many great sightseeing spots and is a place for culture, art and history.

Hotspots for food and drinks

A trip would not be a trip for us without great locations for food and drinks. As you know, Arzu and I love to discover new restaurants and cafés. Doha offers a lot of options in this regard. Our personal highlights are these locations:

– Rosemary Cafe

The classy and stylish cafe is located in the Al Hazm Mall and is a real eye-catcher. The interior as well as the terrace are full of roses and are designed to the smallest detail. Not only the interior is that nice, but also most importantly the coffee tastes very good. We love coffee and this one really belongs to the upper league – an absolutely great coffee pleasure in an instagramable location.

– STK Steak House

High quality steak is available in the noble STK Steak Restaurant in the Ritz Carlton Hotel. This restaurant offers many different kinds of meat and a variety of different dishes in the menu. The service is also top class, so you definitely can find the perfect steak to your taste. We had a delicious potato and truffle soup as starter and the dessert was also a treat. You also have a great view over Doha from this restaurant.

– Parisa

Let’s come to a very breathtaking restaurant, the Parisa – a Persian restaurant in the center of the Souq Waqif. Already with the first step into the venue you pull out your camera and do not know where to look first. The entire restaurant is decorated with mirrors and colorful stones – the walls, ceilings, oh simply everything is a sparkling palace. Moreover, a great taste experience is waiting for the guest. But not only the interior is glittering, also the Persian dishes are doing so. Traditional cold and warm appetizers and a variety of main courses make the choice rather difficult. You would love to try everything. Highly recommended.

– SMAT Restaurant

The SMAT is the hotspot for traditional Arabic fusion cuisine. The authentic and rich dishes of Qatar can hardly be better discovered than in this place. The upper area of the restaurant is very splendidly furnished and invites you to marvel. We would have loved to eat here everyday. You definitely have to integrate a visit to SMAT into your Doha holiday. Our personal highlight dishes are the vine leaf sushi rolls, cheese pockets and braised beef on delicious saffron rice. This restaurant rounds off the culinary journey perfectly.

– Yasmine Palace

Yasmine Palace is located in the area of the Pearl, the artificial island in Doha. This location is an IT-place of Doha and you can meet many locals and famous personalities. The restaurant is very traditional and resembles a typical Arabian palace – there is even a fountain in the middle of the restaurant. The menu is literally a book. We decided to order many small dishes in the middle – sharing is caring! So you have the possibility to get a comprehensive insight into the Qatari cuisine. But the humus and the falafel are a must-have, you will thank me for it! I would almost claim to have eaten the best humus and the best falafel here.

– Katara Marine Restaurant

The Katara Marine is located at the end of a long jetty and also on the artificial island of Qatar. The location is perfect if you want to enjoy a romantic evening on the outside terrace with a view of the sea. The menu is a mix of European and Arabic dishes.

Good to know

There are regularly special festivals in Doha on different themes. Our travel date could hardly have been more appropriate, as the Shop Qatar Festival was just taking place. So it was perfect to explore the great and big shopping malls and to get great offers. With the Shop Qatar Event we also took the opportunity to pursue our passion, the fashion. There were great fashion shows, which of course took place in impressive locations. It was like being in a palace while you could watch the new style trends. It couldn’t have fit better. So we could combine fashion and travel perfectly.

Talking about fashion, Qatar doesn’t have a strict dress code, so you don’t have to cover yourself or have any concerns. Nevertheless to mind and respect the culture, it is recommended not to dress too revealingly. As far as beachwear is concerned, you should be careful not to wear bikinis on public beaches and squares.

In Qatar the working days are from Sunday to Thursday, i.e. Friday is the same as our Sunday and Saturday is also comparable to our Saturday. But the malls are always open and therefore you always have the option to go shopping. You can also change money easily everywhere or you can use your credit card for payment.

Concerning the climate you should keep in mind that Qatar has a desert climate all year. Thus, it is perfect for a short trip to the sun. The average temperature is 17 degrees in winter and 40 degrees in summer. Arzu and me we found the weather in January to be very pleasant, we could do the discovery tour and activities in convenient temperatures around 19-20 degrees during the day. It was only a little bit windy – but it was not disturbing at all. Perfect to get some sun in the winter.

We have arrived at the end of our joint trip to Doha and Qatar. We have shared our impressions and some information with you on this way and it is really important to us to pass on everything as realistic and authentic as possible with you – our valuable readers.
