Shanghai – in the middle of tradition and modernity – a Stay at The EDITION

Was wäre eine Reise ohne leckeres Essen?!

Euer,
Mr.Gentleguy

This year’s first long-distance trip started in the Chinese city of Shanghai before we went to South Korea. Shanghai is known to many and you immediately think of Hollywood movies and a modern world metropolis. But surrounded with many skyscrapers and modern architecture you can also find a lot of history and Chinese tradition.

China has a very far-reaching and distinctive culture and history. Therefore you will find many sights in Shanghai and there is much to discover. With this blog post I would like to give you an overview about Shanghai and the hotspots. So you can visit these special spots on your next trip to Shanghai and get an impression beforehand.

First of all, it is important to research the many entry requirements before travelling to China and to find out which visa applies to you. There are many different models and it is important to meet all the requirements for each model. It’s best to check the pages of the Foreign Office and the Chinese Consulate for the latest regulations. In our case, the 144-hour transit visa was suitable and all we had to do was to apply for a visa at the airport when we immigrated. This was pretty convenient and we had the opportunity to spend our 4 days in beautiful Shanghai without a costly visa procedure.

Shanghai is suitable for a first glimpse into the world of China. It is a city full of contrasts and yet quite a western city. Here you will find many western influences but also traditional markets, side streets and sights. In China’s largest city there is something for everyone. For us it was important to stay central during our trip and to have an ideal starting point for all our endavours. Therefore we decided to stay in the beautiful hotel THE SHANGHAI EDITION. The EDITION is a luxury Lifesytle Hotel on The Bund – the famous promenade and in the middle of the pedestrian zone. All EDITION hotels are individual and adapted to the city in which they are located. Here you can see in the interior how the love for detail is lived and even the warm scent of the home that already receives you in the lobby and pulls you up into the room and bathroom is so individual and welcomes the guests in their new home.

The hotel is perfectly located for a city trip and you can reach every corner of the city from here. We can reach almost everything by walk or with the sightseeing bus leaving directly in front of the hotel. The EDITION has not only the popular Rooftop-Bar of Shanghai – it is said that this was the best view on the city’s skyline – but also 3 hip resturants. Not only from the bar and the Japanese restaurant one has a unique view over Shanghai City and the Bund, but also from the rooms this view is simply a highlight. The rooms are open and spacious and give you a familiar feeling. The EDITION not only offers a comfortable stay but also entertainment. There is a pool table, a cinema, a spa area, a private club and a karaoke room to let your emotions and hobbies run wild. The perfect hotel with everything your heart desires to relax after an exhausting sightseeing day.

The district The Bund, where the EDITION is located, is ideal for a sightseeing start. The promenade stretches 1.5 kilometres along the Huangpu River. On one side of the bank there are buildings reminding of the colonial era and on the other modern skyscrapers that stand as symbols of Shanghai’s skyline.

These skyscrapers are located in the district Pudong, thus on the other side of the river. This is the business district of Shanghai. But also the famous Oriental Pearl Tower and the over 600 meters high Shanghai Tower can be found there. Pudong is very modern and you can also shop here perfectly in the IFC Mall. All sights in Pudong are in one place and therefore within walking distance. A little tip on the side, you can reach everything easily via the platforms above the street and take great photos with the towers.

Back on the other side of the river is the Yu Yuan Garden, an old Chinese garden full of tradition in the middle of the modern city. This garden is over 400 years old and is quite a large complex with ponds, bridges, stone figures, rocks, temples and pavilions. At the gates of the Yu Yuan you will also find the old town and the oldest tea house. Here it is quite hectic and the many small souvenir shops are very crowded. Therefore, it is advisable to arrive here quite early, as we did.

We continue with the district French Concession. Here it is pretty quiet and you can walk through the avenues of trees and green alleys. Those who like to drink coffee can chill in the small cafés and then stroll through the individual shops will love it here. This area also includes Xintiandi with its many historic houses and small shops. In Xintiandi there is also a very authentic and lively street with lots of restaurants and bars. Here you can also find delicious dishes in the diverse restaurants. Our personal hotspot was this area, because it was not only relaxed but also hip.

What would a journey be without tasty food? So let’s come to one of the most important parts for Arzu and me on a journey, the culinary and gastronomy. In order to really get to know a country, you also have to know the cuisine and the unique taste and flavours of local dishes. We love to pick out hotspots and explore locations that are not mainstream. Of course we want to share all these discoveries with you. So now the top discoveries in Shanghai will follow:

Shanghai has great restaurants and bars that stand out with their special furnishings and attention to detail. In our Hotel EDITION you have to go on a culinary journey. The delicious brunch with avocado bread and poashed egg is simply heavenly. We have been very enthusiastic about this great and international breakfast, which not only hotel guests can enjoy. But also in the evening you can expect a selected menu with many great delicacies surrounded by a stylish interior in the restaurant Tavern.

Afterwards you can end the day or evening at the Rooftop Bar of the hotel, the bar is very popular in Shanghai and for many a nice hotspot. The bar is surrounded by green and the skyline of Shanghai.

China is also known for its Cantonese cuisine, so you have to try this as well. The Canton Disco is perfect for this. In modern and stylish surroundings you can taste the delicacies of the sophisticated Cantonese cuisine. This location will later change into a hip disco with a lot of class. You can find it in the public area of the Edition Hotel.

If you like Japanese cuisine, a trip to Hiya at EDITION is also worthwhile. Here you can enjoy Japanese delicacies with a unique view.

The Electric Circus is a must for those who like it a bit funky. Here old school from New York meets the new Shanghai.
As you can see, in the EDITION Hotel you can not only stay overnight, but also make a culinary journey. The hotel offers something for every taste and has a rich variety. It’s perfect to be at home right after having dinner and go out for party and not to have to take a cab to get home. Really practical!

Certainly there are many other locations outside of Edition as well:
We can recommend the Café L’Eclair de Genie to all Eclair lovers and dessert fans. Here you will not only find delicious desserts, but also the latest variations of coffee. Among others the Dirty Coffee is an instagramable eye-catcher. The interior is definitely worth a photo and looks very classy.

A classic on all our trips to Asia is a visit to Din Tai Fung, where you’ll find probably the best dumplings we’ve ever eaten. It is a chain that stands for its delicious and high-quality dumplings. Here you can taste the freshness and you don’t get enough of the small dumplings. Especially the sweet variations you have to try.

In Shanghai there is the world’s biggest Starbucks. This Starbucks is a world of its own and is really huge. There are not only the Starbucks classics, but also other variations of desserts and even its own Teavania area. We were really thrilled by this huge Starbucks world.

Dumplings belong to the Chinese specialties par excellence, therefore another recommendation comes right away. Yang’s Dumpling doesn’t have the classic dumplings, but here you find another variation – the fried dumplings. A nice treat!

Another tip is the creative bakery Wu Pao Chung – this bakery has such unusual delicacies that you can hardly decide. Since bakeries are generally a rarity in China, this shop stands out even more. We have chosen the raspberry croissant, a potato bread and sesame mochi. Everything tasted really good, but especially this pink croissant we will miss very much.

Shanghai is a really vibrant and great city that has a lot to offer. Here you get a gentle introduction to the culture of China. In our opinion 5 days are ideal for a sight trip to Shanghai. This world metropolis should definitely be seen, it is an important destination in Asia and shows a very diverse side. Since it is such a cosmopolitan city, you can also communicate in English quite well.

Many thanks to THE EDITION SHANGHAI for the wam hosting, we felt at home in Shanghai and had a very nice stay.

Shanghai, you were amazing!

Yours,
Mr.Gentleguy
