Es ist wohl mittlerweile bei all meinen Followern bekannt, dass Arzu und ich rieeeeesen Japan-Fans sind und seit unserem Urlaub 2018 in Tokio einfach von der Kultur begeistert sind. Daher ist es uns echt schwer gefallen unser Urlaubsziel für 2019 zu definieren. Wir haben Tokio als Referenz angesetzt und wollten wieder etwas verrücktes und zugleich ein Ziel, das nicht mainstream ist. Schließlich gab es ein Happyend und wir haben uns auf den Weg nach Shanghai und Seoul gemacht. Den Blogpost über unseren ersten Stopp in Shanghai, der pulsierende Metropole Chinas, findet ihr hier. Nach 4 Tagen in Shanghai ging es dann weiter nach Seoul, der Hauptstadt Südkoreas. Hier haben wir volle 10 Tage verracht und eines kann ich euch vorab sagen, wir wären hier gerne für immer geblieben.
Seoul ist eine so pulsierende und vielseitige Stadt, sodass wir an jedem der 10 Tage neue und unvergessliche Eindrücke sammeln konnten. Uns ist aufgefallen, für viele ist Südkorea ein “ausgefallenes” Reiseziel in Asien. Zu mindestens waren die Reaktionen so auf unser Urlaubsziel. Dabei ist dieses Land so schön und man findet hier keine typische Touristenabfertigung, sondern kann wirklich authentisch die koreanische Kultur erleben. In diesem Sinne sind auch kaum Touristen anzutreffen und man kann alles viel besser und in Ruhe auf sich wirken lassen.
Natürlich möchte ich auch diesmal für euch all meine Empfehlungen und Eindrücke in einer Art Reiseführer zusammenstellen. Tipps zu den Stadtvierteln, der Kulinarik, den Insidern und meinen persönlichen Empfindungen findet ihr in diesem Beitrag:
Meine Wahrnehmungen über Seoul
Die Südkoreaner haben uns bereits ab dem Moment unserer Ankunft in Seoul herzlichst empfangen und wirklich egal in welchem Laden, Stadtviertel oder Ort wir waren mit einem warmen und herzlichen Lächeln und Freundlichkeit empfangen. An keinem der 10 Tage haben wir uns schlecht gefühlt, im Gegenteil wir haben uns so willkommen und wohl gefühlt. Die Straßen Seouls sind sicher und man braucht hier selbst nachts keine Angst haben. Hilfsbereite und nette Menschen findet man ebenfalls an jeder Ecke. Ach ja und eines muss ich euch auch noch auf den Weg geben, die Menschen in Seoul sind einfach sowas von stylish und modebewusst. Ich finde sie übertreffen sogar die Messlatte Tokios. Es war einfach wirklich jeder einzelne so gut gekleidet und gepflegt, was natürlich auch mit den tollen Beauty- und Modebrands zusammenhängt (dazu aber später mehr).
Seoul ist eine sehr forgeschrittene und moderne Stadt, man sieht hier Innovationen der anderen Dimension und wirklich eine hochentwickelte asiatische Metropole. Da können wir uns einiges abschauen!
Die Stadtviertel – wo soll ich bleiben
Seoul hat einige verschiedene Stadtviertel zu bieten, daher sollte man auf seine eigenen Vorlieben und Präferenzen bei der Wahl des Hotelstandorts achten. Jedes Viertel ist für sich schön und hat einen eigenen Flair – Richtig oder Falsch gibt es hier sowieso nicht.
Mapo
In diesem Viertel findet ihr viele tolle und hippe Cafés. Persönlich würde ich Mapo als das Hipster-Eck einordnen. Die meisten verrückten Shops und Locations findet ihr in dieser Ecke. Unter anderem haben wir hier auch tolle Shootinglocations gefunden und konnten uns nicht entscheiden, wo wir überall was essen und trinken wollen. Am Ende hatten wir regelrecht ein Foodkoma und sind ins Hotel gerollt. Dieses Viertel ist auch voll mit jungen Studenten und hat einen alternativen Flair.
Itaewon
Hier findet ihr viele Bars, Discos und Restaurants aneinader gereiht. Insbesondere Nachts pulsiert die Stadt hier und es ist immer viel los. Dieses Viertel hat aber auch tolle kleine Shops und traditionelle Märkte. Nachtschwärmer sind hier genau richtig, das Partyvolk von Seoul wartet hier auf einen.
Gangnam
Oppa Gangnam Style…. wem sagt Gangnam wohl nichts?! Spätestens seit dem Hitsong kennt man undbwusst oder bewusst dieses Stadtviertel Soeuls. Gangnam ist etwas weiter vom Zentrum entfernt und befindet sich auf der anderen Seite des Rivers. In diesem Stadtviertel treffen Businessleute auf Partyleute und die High-Society Südkoreas. Viele Schönheitskliniken, teure Autos und extrem gestylte Frauen sind hier nicht zu übersehen. Neben all dem sind aber auch sehr extravagante und moderne Wolkenkratzer zu bewundern. ich persönlich finde Gangnam hat etwas von Manhattan. Dieses Viertel ist sehr vorurteilbehaftet, allerdings hat es Arzu und mir sehr gut gefallen – da hier nicht nur die tolle und überragende Starfield Library ist, sondern auch andere Sehenswürdigkeiten wie unter anderem das Samsung D-Light Museum. Darüber hinaus ist dieses Viertel sehr lebendig aber dennoch schick und stilvoll. Für Sightseeing liegt Gangnam etwas sehr weit von den Haupt-Sehenswürdigkeiten entfernt, daher würde ich persönlich dort nicht im Hotel bleiben. Allerdings ist es defintiv ein Muss für alle Seoul-Reisenden.
Hongdae
Dies ist das Univiertel Seouls, dieses Viertel ist voll mit jungen Studenten und daher auch ganz unterschiedlichen Menschen. Hier wird Individualität sehr groß geschrieben und jeder verwirklicht seinen eigenen Stil. Modebewusstsein wrd natürlich ganz groß geschrieben, dies war der perfekte Ort für Arzu und mich um verrückte Styles asuzuleben. Natürlich gibt es hier deshalb auch sehr viele coole Stores von Brands die es in Europa nicht gibt und auch kleine südkoreanische hippe Shops.
Myeongdong
So viele Menschen auf einem Fleck habe ich nirgendwo anders in Seoul gesehen. Hier ist wirklich immer sehr viel los. Hier ist das Shoppingherz von Seoul, viele Shops und K-Beauty Brands warten hier auf einen. Ich habe noch nie so etwas erlebt wie hier, es gibt nämlich einen eigenen Stadtplan für die Shoppingstraßen, damit man nicht verloren geht. Außerdem stehen einem spezielle Volunteers zu Verfügung, falls man doch einmal nicht den Shop den man sucht findet. Diese “Helfer” sind durch ihre roten Cowboy-Hüte zu erkennen. Achtet hier aber unbedingt darauf, euch eine Roadmap am anfang der Straße zu holen. Außerdem werden euch vor den K-Beauty Shops einige Mitarbeiter versuchen Gesichtsmasken anzudrehen, achtet hier darauf “richtige” Angebote von Lockmitteln zu unterscheiden. Arzu und ich sind gezielt zu Stores, die uns empfohlen wurden, da es wirklich sooooo viele Beauty Shops gibt und man sonst überrannt wird. Informiert euch daher vorab, welche Beauty-Brand zu eiuch passt und in Frage kommt. Vor Ort sind die Läden oftmals sehr überfüllt und nicht immer sind die Bezeichnungen für uns lesbar, da vieles auf koreanisch steht. Aber keine Sorge – die gastfreundlichen und hilfsbereiten Koreaner helfen euch immer gerne!
Bukchon Hanok Village
Wer kennt dieses Stadtviertekl wohl nicht?! Ein Foto und Instagram Hotspot den wohl jeder schon einmal auf einem Bild gesehen hat. Ein Örtchen mit sehr viel Traditio und dem “alten” Seoul. Ein wirklich sehr beeidnruckender Ort, an dem man sehen kann wie idyllisch und kreativ Seoul sein kann. Die kleinen Gassen in Kombination mit den alten traditionellen Häusern, übermitteln einen ganz besonderen Flair. Hier sieht man wie viel Geschichte und Tradition in dem hochmodernen Seoul steckt.
Gyeongbokgung
Wir sind in diesem Viertel geblieben, von hier aus erreicht man wirklich ganz easy und schnell nahezu jede Sehenswürdigkeit. Manches sind wir sogar zu Fuß nacheinander abgelaufen, wie zum Beispiel den Gyeongbokgung Palace und das Hanok Village. Unser Hotel lag daher wirklich im Herzen von Seoul und somit sehr zentral. Darüber hinaus ist dieses Viertel recht ruhig und auch perfekt für den nächtlichen gemütlichen Spaziergang ausgelegt- den Arzu und ich gerne im Urlaub machen. Das Four Seasons Seoul ist ein sehr stilvolles und modernes Hotel, in dem wir uns wirklich wie zu Hause gefühlt haben. Ich hatte bisher in noch keinem anderen Hotel dieses Gefühl, dass jeder einzelne Mitarbeiter uns kennt und jeden Tag mit dem Namen begrüßt und verabschiedet. Das Four Seasons Seoul ist ein relativ großes Haus, dass aber vom Flair und der persönlichen Atmosphäre eher wie in kleines Boutique Hotel einzustufen ist. Ich habe jeden Tag die Gastfreundlichkeit und die herzliche Stimmung gespürt, hier ist man kein normaler Gast, sondern Teil der Four Season Familie. Die Zimmer sind sehr modern und stilvoll eingerichtet und haben einen grandiosen Ausblick über das Stadtviertel bzw. den prächtigen Palast.
Die versteckte Hotelbar, die zu einem Must-See in Seoul zählt und mit ihren Cocktails punktet, ist genau wie alles andere in diesem Hotel einfach grandios (dazu später mehr). Aber ein ganz besonderes Highlight war mein Geburtstag im Four Seasons in Seoul, wirklich JEDER Mitarbeiter wusste über meinem Ehrentag bescheid und hat mir gratuliert. Das war wirklich ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis und auch hier sieht man wieder welch familiäre und persönliche Stimmung die in diesem Hotel herrscht. Eines steht fest, wir werden in Seoul immer wieder in diesem tollen Hotel bleiben. Ehrlich gesagt, vermissen wir sogar jeden einzelnen Mitarbeiter.
Das Hotel bietet wirklich ein tollen rundum Service und Wünsche werden einem von den Augen abgelesen. Ihr müsst hier auch unbedingt das Inroom Dining und Breakfast probieren, mit dem schönen Ausblick über Seoul im Bett eingekuschelt kann man die high-quality Menüs genießen. Ein wirklich perfektes Hotel – wohlverdiente 5 Sterne!
Jedes Viertel hat seinen besonderen Flair und bietet unterschiedliche Vorteile, daher kann man in Seoul kaum etwas falsch machen und wird einen Volltreffer landen.

Hotspots für Food und Drinks
Jetzt kommen wir zu meiner Lieblingsrubrik, dem Essen und Trinken. Wie ihr wisst sidn Arzu udn ich begeisterte Foodies. Wir lieben es zu schlemmern und Hotspots zu entdecken. Wir möchten natürlich unsere Spots mit euch teilen. Koreanisches Essen ist sehr lecker und vielseitig, wir haben eine Küche kennegerlent die wir bishe raus München nicht kannten. Leide rgibt es viel zu weinge koreanische Restaurants hier zu Lande. Daher war es für uns wirklich eine kulinarische Reise ins Unbekannte.
Charles Bar – Four Season Hotel
Wer Drinks in einer außergewöhnlichen und äußerst stilvollen Umgebung mag, sollte unbedingt hier vorbeischauen. Die Bar ist im Four Season Hotel in Seoul versteckt und nicht auf anhieb zu finden, aber das nette Personal wird euch den Weg in die Oase der Drinks zeigen. Bereits mit dem ersten Schritt in die dunklen und geheimnisvollen Räumlichkeiten der Hotelbar, weiß man, dass ein unvergesslicher Abend beginnt. Die Bar wurde als Asiens 4. beste und Seouls beste Bar ausgezeichnet. Dies kann ich auch definitiv bestätigen.
KKANBU
Was wäre ein Seoul besuch ohne dem Traditionellen Chicken und Beer. Traditionell zubereitetes knuspriges Hähnchen in würziger Soße oder lediglich Dips, dazu Pommes und eine riesige Portion an Bier – das ist der Bestandteil eines typischen Freitagabends in Seoul. Man trifft hier Einheimische die ihren Feierabend genießen und viel lachen und positive Energie versprühen. Der Geschmack des zarten Hähnchens liegt mir immer noch auf der Zunge. Aber Achtung – das scharfe Chicken ist wirklich seeeeeeeeeeehr scharf!!!!!!! Probiert hier unbedingt auch die Reiscakes.
The April
Das Café befindet sich in dem hippen Viertel Mapo. Mit seinem exotischen Interior sticht es einem eigentlich gleich ins Auge. Hier gibt es tolle Drinks und kleine Snacks für Zwischendurch.
Cartoon/ Greem Café
Ich glaube diesen Hotspot hat jeder von euch bereits auf meinem Instagram-Account gesehen. Mein persönliches Highlight war dieses Örtchen. Hier habe ich auch meinen Geburtstag gefeiert. Tolle Fotos und das Staunen ist garantiert. Mit dem Betreten dieses Spots befindet ihr euch in mitten einem Cartoon, alles und damit meine ich wirklich ALLES ist in diesem Stil. Daher wirken die Bilder auch sehr real. Der Kaffee und Kuchen ist nicht überragend, aber es lohnt sich allein wegen der Kulisse dort etwas zu trinken.
Phung Restaurant
Wer thailändisches Essen mag, sollte hier einen Abstecher machen. Dieses gelbe Haus in Mapo ist nicht zu übersehen. Sehr authentisch und lecker.
Layered Café
Wieder ein Spot in Mapo. Ich taufe diesen Ort als Schlaraffenland. Der Grund?! Das Kuchenbuffet ist einfach sowas von genial, sodass man nicht weiß für was man sich entscheiden soll. Ich glaube mehr brauch ich dazu wirklich nicht sagen.
Four B Coffee
Hier haben Arzu und ich jeden Tag mindestens einen Kaffee getrunken. Ausgebildete Barista zaubern einzigartig schmeckende Kaffeespezialitäten. Hier kann man auch perfekt schlemmen, denn es gibt frisch gebackene Bagels mit verschiedenen Streichcremes. Ein Seoul-Trip ohne einen Besuch bei 4B ist für uns nicht mehr dankbar.
Maple Tree Restaurant
Korean Barbecue ist ein absolutes Must-Do in Seoul. Bei dieser Art von Barbecue grillt ihr selbst am Tisch und könnt dabei Soju (koreanischer Schnaps) trinken. Es ist wirklich ein riesen Spaß auf diese Art und Weise Abendessen. Es gibt zahlreiche derartige Resturants, wir persönlich haben uns für das Mapple Tree entschieden, da es uns von vielen Einheimischen empfohlen wurde und das Interior einfach überragend ist.
Premium Jjimdak
Hier gibt es traditionelle koreanische Küche. Die Speisen sind sehr lecker und ihr findet einen Klassiker.
Egg Drop
Ein toller Laden für den kleinen Hunger – bei Egg Drop gibt es tolle Sandwiche. Die Toasts werden auf spezielle Art zubereitet und haben eine tolle Haussoße. Wie es der Name schon sagt, ist der Hauptbestandteil dieses Toasts, Ei.
Tiger Curry
In diesem Restaurant gibt es, wie es bereits der Name sagt, Currys. Der Geschmack ist wirklich gut und der Laden einen Besuch wert.
Onion Café
Im Onion gibt es tollen Kaffee von erfahrenen Baristas und traditionell gebackene frische Backwaren. Wir haben mehrere Gebäcke probiert und man hat bei jedem einzelnen die frische geschmeckt. Ein sehr schön traditionell eingerichteter Ort mit einem ganz besonderen Flair.
Innisfree Café
Ja ihr hört richtig, der Beauty-Store Innisfree hat in Seoul auch ein eigenes Café. Ihr könnt hier leckere Bowls, Avocadobrot und Waffeln probieren. Außerdem gibt es saisonale Specials. Zu unserer Zeit war es ein Latte Macchiato mit leckeren Blüten und Erdbeergeschmack.
Airrang Cheese Hot Dog
Seoul hat tolles Streetfood zu bieten, unter anderem werdet ihr sehr oft dem Hot Dog aus Käse begegnen. Dieser frittierte Cheese Hot Dog schmeckt einfach grandios. Wir haben uns bei dem Shop Airrang diese Delikatesse geholt, ihr werdet es aber überall sehen.
Stylenanda Café
Diese Spot habe ich in meiner Liste für meine weiblichen Follower aufgenommen. Das Styelnanda ist ein Shop und zugleich Cafe. Die Farbe pink dominiert hier und ist ein toller Instagramspot.
Cachi Flowercoffee
Dieses Cafe und Floristiker in einem hat nicht nur sehr nettes Personal, sondern auch ein Interior in dem wirklich kein Detail fehlt. Noch dazu hat uns der Kaffee, als Kaffeeliebhaber sehr überzeugt. Allerdings achtet darauf, rechtzeitig hinzugehen, denn die Öffnungszeiten sind nicht sehr lang.
Big Guy’s Seafood
Ihr liebt Meeresfrüchte?! Dann ab in dieses Restaurant. Hier gibt es allerlei Fischgerichte und leckere Meeresfrüchte. Das Interior ist auch sehr schön.
Baekmidang Ice
Seit 1964 existiert bereits dieser Eisladen. Diese Tradition schmeckt man auch definitiv raus. Wir haben hier fast jeden Tag ein Eis gegessen. Wir empfehlen die Sorte Schokolade.
Artisée Bäckerei
Eine Bäckerei vom anderen Stern. An dem riesigen Tisch voller leckerer Gebäcke und Co. Kann man sich wahrlich nicht entscheiden. Schaut unbedingt in einer der vielen Filialen vorbei.
Italian Bistro
Leckere Pasta und Pizza, wenn man mal zwischendurch wieder Lust auf europäisches Essen hat. Insbesondere die schwarze Calzone ist ein Highlight in diesem Restaurant. Diese Location findet ihr in der Starfield Mall.
Choco Pie House
Das ist kein Restaurant oder Cafe, aber ein kleiner Store in dem ihr traditionelle Kuchen kaufen könnt. Choco Pie ist koreanisch und eine Art Kuchengebäck mit Cream. Ihr könnt euch bei diesem Store eine individuelle Auswahl zusammenstellen und sogar als Mitbringsel euren Liebsten zu Hause mitbringen.
Dachterrasse Seoullu
Ein hidden Hotspot der einfach sowas von instagramable ist. Dieser Spot ist in einem Bürogebäude versteckt und gar nicht einfach zu finden. Ist man aber einmal angekommen, ist man in Mitten einer Dachterrasse mit der berühmten Aufschrift Seoul.
Jong Chun
Dies ist ein Coffee & Rice Cake Store, den es bereits seit 1975 gibt. Man kann sich durch die verschiedenen Geschmackrichtungen durchprobieren.
Bistopping Ice Cream
T-Rex Eiscreme und Co. – nur kein langweiliges Eis in der Waffel, ist das Motto in diesem Laden. Bei Bistopping gibt es wirklich verrücktestes Eis. Es wird der eigenen Kreativität keine Grenzen gesetzt. Man kann sich sein ganz individuelles Eis zusammenstellen und hat am Ende wirklich einen hingucker.
Monks Butcher
Nicht nur Vegetarier und Veganer ist dieses Restaurant einen Besuch wert. Monks Butcher ist ein Restaurant ganz ohne tierische Gerichte. Jedes einzelne Gericht ist hier vegetarisch und man lernt wirklich tollste Gerichte kennen. Das Interior und die Dachterrasse runden den Besuch ab. Ein wirkliches Highlight.
Over the Dish
Arzu und ich ahben hier zwei sehr traditionelle koreanische Gerichte gegessen und sogar nachbestellt, weil es so lecker war. Ganz genau, wir haben im Over the Dish Bibimbap (eine Art Bowl) und Kimbap (ähnlich wie Sushi, nur dicker) probiert. Zwei wirklich sehr tolle Gerichte, die ihr unbedingt probieren müsst.
Good to know
Wusstet ihr, dass die Musikszene in Seoul sehr ausgeprägt ist und K-Pop in allen Altersklassen beliebt ist?! Bevor wir nach Seoul gereist sind, kannten wir ehrlich gesagt K-Pop lediglich aus Tokio – denn die Japaner vergöttern regelrecht die koreanischen Bands. Allerdings war uns K-Pop kein wirklicher Begriff, bis wir BTS und andere Bands in Südkorea immer wieder in den Radios und Läden gehört haben. Es hat uns sogar in seinen Bann gezogen und wir haben nun auf unserer Playlist viele K-Pop Songs. Hört doch mal bei Gelegenheit in BTS Songs rein…alle Vorurteile werden definitiv verfliegen – denn die koreanischen Bands machen keine kitschige Musik, sondern man erkennt hier wirklich das Talent.
Ihr könnt relativ günstig Taxi fahren, ist sogar manchmal schneller als mit den Öffentlichen. Arzu und ich sind die meisten Strecken zu Fuß gelaufen, falls die Distanz aber größer war, haben wir uns ein Taxi geholt. Die Taxen in Seoul sind alle elektrisch und sehr modern. Allerdings solltet ihr die Adresse auf Koreanisch parat haben, denn die meisten Taxifahrer können kein Englisch. Am besten, lasst ihr euch die Adresse im Hotel notieren. Die Hoteladresse solltet ihr euch auch auf Koreanisch mitnehmen.
Generell solltet ihr im Hinterkopf behalten, dass nicht jeder englisch versteht und sprechen kann. Die Schilder, Labels und Menüs sind ebenfalls nicht in allen Restaurants/ Shops auf Englisch. Allerdings stellt dies in keinster Weise ein Hindernis dar, denn jeder ist so hilfsbereit und freundlich. Egal in welcher Situation, die Koreaner helfen einem immer – sei es mit Hand und Fuß – man kann sich verständigen.
Falls ihr in einem warmen Monat vor Ort sein solltet, dann werdet ihr noch ein ganz besonderes Phänomen erleben. Die Stadt stellt nämlich extra riesige Sonnenschirme an den Kreuzungen auf, damit die Passanten an der roten Ampel im Schatten stehen können. Ist das nicht eine großartige Fürsorge, jeder denkt an den anderen. Diese Mentalität haben wir aber wirklich jeden Tag erlebt, der respektvolle Umgang der Koreaner miteinander ist einfach unbeschreiblich schön.
K-Beauty ist wirklich sehr bekannt. Die Koreaner legen viel Wert auf Pflegeprodukte und Schönheit. Daher solltet ihr euch unbedingt Masken mitnehmen und Cremes. Lasst euch allerdings vorher beraten und auf euren Hauttypen abgestimmte Produkte finden. Alternativ könnt ihr euch die Brands und die Produkte zuvor im Internet genauer anschauen. Nicht alle Beschreibungen auf den Labels sind nämlich auf Englisch. Persönlich empfehle ich euch einen Besuch bei Innisfree, hier gibt es für alle Hauttypen etwas und die Beratung ist super.
Noch eine Info für die Raucher unter euch, auf der Straße zu rauchen ist hier ungern gesehen. Entweder in den Seitenstraßen, zwischen den Häusern sind die Raucher zu finden oder in speziell ausgeschilderten Bereichen.
Seoul ist einfach ein so schönes und herzliches Land. Bereits jetzt wissen wir, wir werden eines Tages wieder in Seoul sein. Nach Tokio ist dies unsere Lieblingsstadt. Die Menschen, die Kultur, Kunst und einfach alles ist so besonders. Ich hoffe mit diesem Beitrag euch dieses noch nicht all zu verbreitete Urlaubsziel näher bringen zu können. All my followers know that Arzu and I are big fans of Japan and since our holiday in Tokyo in 2018 we have simply been enthusiastic about the culture. Therefore it was really hard for us to define our holiday destination for 2019. We set Tokyo as a reference and wanted something crazy and not mainstream at the same time. After all, we finally could find our destinations and we departed for Shanghai and Seoul. You can find the blog post about our first stop in Shanghai, the pulsating metropolis of China, here. After 4 days in Shanghai we went on to Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Here we spent full 10 days and one thing I can tell you in advance, we would have liked to stay here forever.
Seoul is such a pulsating and versatile city, that we could collect new and unforgettable impressions on each of the 10 days. We noticed, that for many people South Korea is a “extraordinary” destination in Asia. At least the reactions to our holiday destination were like this. But this country is so beautiful and you won’t find any typical tourist check-in here, but you can experience the Korean culture authentically. In this sense, there are not that much tourists around, so you can enjoy a much more authentic and unique city.
Of course, this time I would also like to compile all my recommendations and impressions for you in a kind of travel guide. In this article you will find tips about the districts, the culinary, the insiders and my personal feelings:
My perceptions about Seoul
The South Koreans welcomed us warmly from the moment we arrived in Seoul and really welcomed us with a warm and cordial smile and friendliness in any shop, district or place we were in. We felt so familiar and comfortable. The streets of Seoul are safe and you don’t need to be afraid even at night. You will also find helpful and nice people at every corner. Oh yes and one thing I have to give you on your way, the people in Seoul are just so stylish and fashion-conscious. I think they even surpass Tokyo’s benchmark. Every single one of them was so well dressed and well groomed, which of course has to do with the great beauty and fashion brands (more about that later) that you can find in South Korea.
Seoul is a very advanced and modern city, you see different innovations and really a highly developed Asian metropolis. We can learn a lot from that!
The districts – where should I stay?
Seoul has several different neighborhoods to offer, so you should be aware of your own preferences and selections when choosing your hotel location. Each district has its own flair and beauty – there is no right or wrong here anyway.
Mapo
In this district you will find many great and hip cafés. Personally I would classify Mapo as the hipster corner. You’ll find most of the crazy shops and locations in this corner. Among other things we also found great shooting locations here and couldn’t decide where we wanted to eat and drink. In the end we had a food coma and rolled into the hotel. This area is also full of young students and has an alternative flair.
Itaewon
Here you will find many bars, discos and restaurants lined up side by side. Especially at night the city pulsates and there is always a lot going on. This area also has great small shops and traditional markets. Night owls are just right here, the party people of Seoul are waiting for you here.
Gangnam
Oppa Gangnam Style… Who doesn’t know Gangnam?! Since the hit song of 2012 , this district of Seoul became so famous all around the world. Gangnam is a little further away from the centre and is located on the other side of the river Hangang. In this district business people meet party people and the high society of South Korea. Many beauty clinics, expensive cars and extremely styled women are all around here. Beside all there are also very extravagant and modern skyscrapers to admire. I personally think Gangnam has something of Manhattan. This quarter is very prejudiced, but Arzu and I liked it very much – because here is not only the great and outstanding Starfield Library, but also other sights like the Samsung D-Light Museum. In addition, this neighborhood is very lively but chic and stylish. For sightseeing, Gangnam is a bit far away from the main sights, so I wouldn’t stay in the hotel there personally. However, it is definitely a must for all Seoul travelers.
Hongdae
This is the university district of Seoul, this quarter is full of young students and therefore very different and diverse people. Individuality is very important here and each person has his or her own style. Of course, fashion consciousness is very important, this was the perfect place for Arzu and me to see crazy styles. Of course there are a lot of cool stores of brands that don’t exist in Europe and also small South Korean hip shops.
Myeongdong
So many people in one place. I haven’t seen such a spot anywhere else in Seoul. There really is a lot going on here. Here is the shopping heart of Seoul, many shops and K-Beauty Brands are waiting for you. I have never experienced anything like this before, because there is a city map for the shopping streets so that you don’t get lost. Moreover, there are special volunteers available in case one does not find the shop one is looking for. These “helpers” are recognizable by their red cowboy hats. But be sure to get a roadmap at the beginning of the road. In addition, in front of the K-Beauty Shops some employees will try to put on face masks, pay attention here to distinguish “right” offers from others. Arzu and I went to stores that were recommended to us, because there are really sooooo many beauty shops and you get overrun otherwise. Therefore, inform yourself in advance which beauty brand suits your needs the best. The shops here are often very crowded and the shop names are not self-explaining as many things are written in Korean. But don’t worry – the hospitable and supportive Koreans are always happy to help!
Bukchon Hanok Village
Who doesn’t know this neighborhood?! A photo as an Instagram Hotspot that probably everyone has seen on a picture before. A place with a lot of tradition and the “old” Seoul. A really very impressive place where you can see how idyllic and creative Seoul can be. The small alleys in combination with the old traditional houses convey a very special flair. Here you can see how much history and tradition there is in the ultra-modern Seoul.
Gyeongbokgung
We have stayed in this district, from here you really can easily and quickly reach almost every sight. We even walked to the Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Hanok Village. Therefore, our hotel was really well located in the heart of Seoul and thus very central. Moreover, this neighbourhood is perfectly designed for a conveniently exploring the city by walk that Arzu and I like to do on holidays. The Four Seasons Seoul is a very stylish and modern hotel in which we really felt at home. I have never had the feeling in any other hotel that every single employee knows us and greets us every day by our names. The Four Seasons Seoul is a relatively large hotel, but its flair and personal atmosphere makes it more like a small boutique hotel. Every day I felt the hospitality and the cordial atmosphere, here you are not a normal guest, but part of the Four Season family. The rooms are very modern and stylishly furnished and have a magnificent view over the city or the magnificent palace.
The hidden hotel bar, the Charles Bar, that belongs to a must-see in Seoul and scores with its cocktails, is just like everything else in this hotel very unique and gorgious (more about that later). But a very special highlight was my birthday in the Four Seasons in Seoul, really EVERY employee knew about my birthday and did congratulate me. This was really a very special experience and also here you can see what a familiar and personal atmosphere exists in this hotel. One thing is for sure, we will always stay in this great hotel in Seoul. To be honest, we even miss every single employee.
The hotel really offers a great all-round service and all wishes are made possible. You also have to try the In-room Dining and Breakfast, with the beautiful view over Seoul nestled in bed you can enjoy the high-quality menus. A really perfect hotel – well deserved 5 stars!
Each district has its own special flair and offers different advantages, so you can hardly do anything wrong in Seoul and will hit the bull’s eye.

Hotspots for food and drinks
Now we come to my favorite section, food and drink. As you know, Arzu and I are enthusiastic Foodies. We love to feast and discover hotspots. Of course we want to share our spots with you. Korean food is very tasty and versatile, we have a kitchen that we didn’t know until out of Munich. There are far too many Korean restaurants here in the country. So for us it was really a culinary journey into the unknown.
Charles Bar – Four Season Hotel
If you like drinks in an extraordinary and extremely stylish environment, you should definitely stop by here. The bar is hidden in the Four Season Hotel in Seoul and can’t be found right away, but the nice staff will show you the way to the oasis of drinks. Already with the first step into the dark and mysterious rooms of the hotel bar, you know that an unforgettable evening will begin. The bar was awarded as Asia’s 4th best and Seoul’s best bar. I can definitely confirm this.
KKANBU
What would a Seoul visit be without the Traditional Chicken and Beer. Traditionally prepared crispy chicken in a spicy sauce or just dips, accompanied by French fries and a huge portion of beer – this is part of a typical Friday evening in Seoul. Here you can meet locals who enjoy their evening and laugh a lot and spray positive energy. The taste of the tender chicken is still on my tongue. But beware – the spicy chicken is really spicy!!!!!!!!!! Try the rice cakes here as well.
The April
The café is located in the hip district of Mapo. With its exotic interior it really catches the eye. Here you can get great drinks and snacks for in between.
Cartoon/ Greem Café
I think all of you have already seen this hotspot on my Instagram account. My personal highlight was this place. Here I also celebrated my birthday. Great photos and the amazement is guaranteed. By entering this spot you are in the middle of a cartoon, everything and by that I mean really EVERYTHING is in this style. Therefore the pictures also look very real. The coffee and cake isn’t outstanding, but it’s worth a drink just because of the scenery.
Phung Restaurant
Those who like Thai food should make a detour here. This yellow house in Mapo is not to be overlooked. Very authentic and delicious.
Layered Café
Another spot in Mapo. I baptize this place as a land of milk and honey. The reason? The cake buffet is so ingenious that you don’t know what to choose. I think I really don’t need to say more about it.
Four B Coffee
Arzu and I drank at least one coffee a day here. Trained barista conjure up unique tasting coffee specialities. Here you can also feast perfectly, because there are freshly baked bagels with different spread creams. A Seoul trip without a visit to 4B is no longer grateful for us.
Maple Tree Restaurant
Korean barbecue is an absolute must-do in Seoul. With this kind of barbecue you grill yourself at the table and can drink Soju (Korean schnapps). It’s really a lot of fun to have dinner this way. There are many such resturants, we personally chose the Mapple Tree because it was recommended to us by many locals and the interior is simply outstanding.
Premium Jjimdak
Here you will find traditional Korean cuisine. The food is very tasty and you will find a classic.
Egg Drop
A great shop for the small appetite – at Egg Drop you will find great sandwiches. The toasts are prepared in a special way and have a great house sauce. As the name suggests, the main ingredient of this toast is egg.
Tiger Curry
In this restaurant there are, as the name suggests, Currys. The taste is really good and the shop is worth a visit.
Onion Café
The Onion offers great coffee from experienced baristas and traditionally baked fresh pastries. We tried several pastries and each one tasted fresh. A very nice traditionally furnished place with a very special Falir.
Innisfree Café
Yes, you heard right, the Beauty-Store Innisfree also has its own café in Seoul. Here you can try delicious bowls, avocado bread and waffles. There are also seasonal specials. In our time it was a latte macchiato with delicious flowers and strawberry taste.
Airrang Cheese Hot Dog
Seoul has great street food to offer, among other things you will very often encounter the hot dog made of cheese. This deep-fried Cheese Hot Dog simply tastes great. We got this delicacy from the Airrang shop, but you’ll see it everywhere.
Stylenanda Café
I have included this spot in my list for my female followers. The Styelnanda is a shop and cafe at the same time. The color pink dominates here and is a great instagram spot.
Cachi Flowercoffee
This cafe and florist in one has not only very nice staff, but also an interior in which really no detail is missing. And what’s more, the coffee, as a Frahling lover, convinced us very much. But make sure you get there in time, because the opening hours are not very long.
Big Guy’s Seafood
You love seafood?! Then off to this restaurant. Here you can find all kinds of fish dishes and delicious seafood. The interior is also very beautiful.
Baekmidang Ice
This ice cream shop has existed since 1964. You can definitely taste this tradition. We ate an ice cream here almost every day. We recommend the type of chocolate.
Artisée Bakery
A bakery from the other star. At the huge table full of tasty pastries and Co. one can really not decide. Be sure to stop by one of the many branches.
Italian bistro
Delicious pasta and pizza when you feel like eating European food in between. Especially the black calzone is a highlight in this restaurant. You can find this location in the Starfield Mall.
Choco Pie House
This is not a restaurant or cafe, but a small store where you can buy traditional cakes. Choco Pie is Korean and a kind of cake with cream. You can make your own choice at this store and even bring your sweetheart home as a souvenir.
Roof terrace Seoullu
A hidden hotspot that’s just so instagramable. This spot is hidden in an office building and not easy to find. But once you have arrived, you are in the middle of a roof terrace with the famous inscription Seoul.
Jong Chun
This is a Coffee & Rice Cake Store that has been in existence since 1975. You can try your way through the different flavours.
Bistopping Ice Cream
T-Rex ice cream and Co. – only no boring ice cream in the waffle, is the motto in this shop. At Bistopping there is really craziest ice cream. There are no limits to your own creativity. You can put together your own individual ice cream and you’ll end up with a real eye-catcher.
Monks Butcher
Not only vegetarians and vegans are worth a visit at this restaurant. Monks Butcher is a restaurant without any animal dishes. Every single dish is vegetarian and you get to know really great dishes. The interior and the roof terrace round off the visit. A real highlight.
Over the Dish
Arzu and I ahed here two very traditional Korean dishes and even reordered them because it was so delicious. Exactly, we tried Bibimbap (a kind of Bowl) and Kimbap (similar to Sushi, only thicker) in the Over the Dish. Two really great dishes that you have to try.
Good to know
Did you know that the music scene in Seoul is very strong and K-Pop is popular in all age groups?! Before we travelled to Seoul, we honestly only knew K-Pop from Tokyo – because the Japanese really adore Korean bands. However, we didn’t really know k-pop until we heard BTS and other bands in South Korea on the radio and in the shops. It even fascinated us and we now have a lot of K-Pop songs on our playlist. Listen to BTS songs on occasion…all prejudices will definitely vanish – because the korean bands don’t make kitschy music, you can really see the talent here.
You can take a taxi relatively cheaply, sometimes it’s even faster than with the public ones. Arzu and I walked most of the tracks, but if the distance was longer, we got a taxi. The taxis in Seoul are all electric and very modern. However, you should have the address in Korean ready, because most taxi drivers don’t speak English. The best thing is to have the address noted at the hotel. You should also take the hotel address with you in Korean.
In general, you should keep in mind that not everyone understands and speaks English. The signs, labels and menus are also not in English in all restaurants/shops. However, this is not an obstacle at all, as everyone is so helpful and friendly. No matter what the situation, Koreans always help you – be it by hand or foot – you can communicate.
If you are there in a warm month, you will experience a very special phenomenon. The city puts up extra huge parasols at the crossroads so that passers-by can stand in the shade at the red traffic lights. Isn’t that a great care, everyone thinks of each other. But we really experienced this mentality every day, the respectful way the Koreans treat each other is simply indescribably beautiful.
K-Beauty is really well known. Koreans attach great importance to care products and beauty. That’s why you should take masks and creams with you. However, let them advise you beforehand and find products tailored to your skin type. Alternatively, you can take a closer look at the brands and products on the Internet beforehand. Not all descriptions on the labels are in English. Personally I recommend you to visit Innisfree, there is something for all skin types and the advice is great.
Another info for the smokers among you, to smoke on the street is not welcome here. Either in the side streets, between the houses are the smokers to be found or in specially signposted areas.
Seoul is just such a beautiful and warm country. We already know that one day we will be in Seoul again. After Tokyo this is our favourite city. The people, the culture, the art and everything is so special. With this contribution I hope to be able to bring you closer to this not yet too widespread holiday destination.
